Dictation in Discord on a Mac

Discord has no dictation feature. System dictation types into DMs and channels the same way it types anywhere else. The complication is that Discord already claims a global hotkey and already listens to your microphone.

The Discord-specific trap: push to talk is global

Discord's push-to-talk keybind is not scoped to the Discord window. That is why Discord asks for Input Monitoring permission on macOS: it needs to see the key while another app is in front. If your hold-to-dictate hotkey uses the same key, holding it to speak also opens your microphone into whatever voice channel you are sitting in. You dictate a note into a text box and the channel hears every word of it. Check it in one minute:

1. Open Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video → Input Mode and read the current Push to Talk shortcut.
2. Set your dictation hotkey to something that does not overlap it. Right Command and Right Option are usually free on both sides.
3. Test it: join an empty voice channel, hold the dictation hotkey, and check whether the green ring appears around your avatar. If it does, the keys still collide.

The second trap: Return sends the message

Discord posts on Return. A dictated "new paragraph" splits one message into two. Use Shift+Return for a line break inside a message, and stop dictating before you reach for the send key.

The third trap: markdown fires on dictated punctuation

Discord's composer renders markdown, so dictated punctuation words become formatting. A spoken "asterisk asterisk" starts bold. A spoken "backtick" opens a code span and everything after it renders in monospace until you close it. A spoken "greater than" turns the line into a quote. Say punctuation only where you want the character.

Dictate a Discord message

1. Turn Dictation on once: System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Full steps in enable dictation on macOS.
2. Click into the message box so the cursor is in the composer, not in the server search bar.
3. Start Dictation and speak the whole message. Say "comma" and "period"; skip "new line".
4. Stop Dictation, read it back, then press Return to send.

If nothing types at all

• Discord's own microphone permission covers voice chat, not dictation. macOS captures dictation itself, so check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for the dictation tool.
• If Discord has grabbed the microphone exclusively through a virtual audio device, quit the device's helper app and try again.
• Dictation dead everywhere, not just Discord: dictation not working on Mac.

Picking a hotkey that never collides
