MacWhisper does more for one payment. The direct-download lifetime licence covers file transcription, meeting detection and recording, every AI provider, a CLI, and dictation into any text field, which is the entire Voice Type feature set plus several things Voice Type does not do. If one tool for both recordings and live dictation is the goal, MacWhisper is the better purchase. We deliberately do not print a MacWhisper price here because its Gumroad listing renders client-side and could not be read directly.
Why the job matters more than the model
MacWhisper is broader. It makes sense if audio already exists as a file, if you want transcript workflows, or if you want one product that spans more than live dictation alone.
Voice Type is the opposite posture. You use it while you are already working, with the cursor in the app that needs text right now. The whole point is to replace typing in the moment, not to create a broader transcription pipeline afterward.
