Dictation in Jira on a Mac

Jira has no dictation feature. What it has is an editor that rewrites your text as you speak it and a set of single-key shortcuts waiting on the other side of the field boundary.

The Jira-specific trap: the editor autoformats mid-sentence

Atlassian's editor converts markdown as you type it, which means it converts markdown as you dictate it. The conversions that catch dictated speech:

• A dictated slash opens the insert menu, and the words after it filter that menu instead of entering the description. Press Escape to close it.
• A dictated asterisk or hyphen followed by a space starts a bullet list, and every subsequent spoken line break adds another bullet.
• A dictated hash followed by a space converts the line into a heading.
• A dictated number, period, space converts the line into a numbered list, which is why dictating a version like "1. 2. 3" produces a list rather than a version string.

Command+Z immediately after an unwanted conversion reverts the formatting without deleting the words.

The second trap: single letters are Jira commands

Jira Cloud binds single keys to actions, including "c" to create an issue. Inside the description field those keys are just characters. Outside it they are commands, so dictation that starts before the field has focus opens a create-issue dialog partway through your first sentence. Confirm the text cursor is blinking inside the description before you speak.

Dictate a ticket

1. Turn Dictation on once: System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Full steps in enable dictation on macOS.
2. Open the issue and click into the description field. Summary, assignee, and the structured fields are separate controls and take no spoken navigation.
3. Dictate the body in one pass. Say "comma" and "period"; avoid "slash", "asterisk", and "hash".
4. Stop, then type the parts speech gets wrong: issue keys, links, version strings, and log excerpts.
5. Apply formatting last, with the toolbar rather than by voice.

A shape that survives being spoken

1. The summary in one sentence, from the user's side.
2. The context: why this is being done now, not what the code should do.
3. Steps to reproduce, spoken as a sequence.
4. Expected result, then actual result. Two sentences.
5. Acceptance criteria, spoken as plain sentences and formatted into a checklist afterwards.

If nothing types at all

• Jira Cloud runs in a browser, so the microphone permission belongs to the browser and to the dictation tool, under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
• If dictated text vanishes on save, the description was still in the editor's unsaved state when focus moved. Click Save before switching windows.
• Dictation dead everywhere, not just Jira: dictation not working on Mac.

A hotkey that inserts once instead of streaming keys

Voice Type writes punctuation from the audio and inserts the finished passage on release, which gives the editor no per-character stream to autoformat, and the same hotkey works in the branch, the pull request, and the standup message: voice typing for Mac.
