Dictation in Notion on a Mac

Notion has no dictation feature of its own on macOS. System dictation types into it like a keyboard, and Notion's editor reacts to three characters in a way no plain text field does: Return, slash, and the opening bracket.

The Notion-specific trap: Return makes a new block

In a Google Doc a line break is a line break. In Notion, Return ends the current block and starts a fresh one. A dictated "new paragraph" therefore does not format your note, it chops it into separate blocks, each with its own drag handle and its own block ID. Rearranging or bulk-editing that later is manual work.

• To stay inside one block, press Shift+Return instead of speaking a line-break command.
• To dictate a genuinely multi-block note (a list of meeting decisions, one per block), speaking "new paragraph" is the right call. Decide which one you want before you start talking.
• Toggle lists, callouts, and quotes each hold their own child blocks, so the same rule applies inside them.

The second trap: a dictated slash opens the command menu

Typing "/" in a Notion block opens the block command menu and everything you say next filters that menu instead of entering the page. Dictating a date as "9 slash 14" or a path as "slash users slash" is enough to trigger it. Press Escape to close the menu, then continue. The same applies to a dictated "open bracket open bracket", which opens the page-link picker.

Dictate into a Notion page

1. Turn Dictation on once: System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Full steps in enable dictation on macOS.
2. Click into the block you want to fill. An empty page has one empty paragraph block waiting.
3. Start Dictation and speak the whole passage. Say "comma" and "period"; hold off on "new paragraph" unless you want a block break.
4. Stop Dictation. Notion saves continuously, so there is nothing to commit.

Which database fields accept dictated text

A Notion database row is not one text field, and only some property types take dictation at all.

• Text, Title, and Comment: ordinary text entry. Dictation works normally.
• Select and Multi-select: what you say filters existing options. Speaking a phrase that matches no option offers to create a new one, so a mis-transcribed word can silently add a new tag to the database schema. Check the list before pressing Return.
• Date, Person, Relation, and Status: pickers, not text fields. Dictation filters them at best and does nothing at worst. These stay on the keyboard.

If nothing types at all

• Notion in a browser and Notion's desktop app are separate microphone clients on macOS. If dictation works in one and not the other, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for whichever one you are actually using.
• Dictation dead everywhere, not just Notion: dictation not working on Mac.

A hold-to-dictate hotkey sidesteps the block splitting
